Do not become a realtor if you are…
2. Impatient. If you think you’ll make a 6-figure income overnight.
3. A DIY-er. (Do-It-Yourself-er) If you’d rather figure it out on your own.
4. A Quitter. If you give up easily and just want to “try” it out.
5. Not driven. If you need somebody else to hold you accountable.

Should you become a real estate agent? Well, probably not.
Hi there, it’s Kevin Ward, the founder of YesMasters Real Estate Success Training, helping you get more YES and more successes in your business and in your life.
And yet, I’m not kidding, you probably shouldn’t become a real estate agent. If you’re thinking about it, you don’t have your license yet and you’re thinking, is this a time to get into real estate? Should I get into real estate? Is real estate a good career path? Should I become a realtor? You need to know that 70% to 80% of all real estate agents, when they get their license are going to flunk out, flush out, fail out within 24 months. So the answer is, odds are, you should not become a realtor unless you can pass the 5-question quiz that I’m about to give you about whether or not becoming a real estate agent is right for you.
Now, having said that, I want to tell you this, I think being a real estate agent is one of the greatest career paths on the planet if you have what it takes. So in this video, I’m going to lay out for you why you should not become a realtor and whether or not you should actually become a real estate agent.
So, why should I not become a real estate agent?
Number one, do not become a realtor if you are lazy. If you’re lazy, don’t do it. Don’t become a realtor. If you’re looking for easy money, if you’re thinking that becoming a real estate agent, man, because I like houses and I know a lot of people, or I have a background in marketing, or I’m great at sales, I’m a natural sales person, and you think you’re going to get your real estate license and you’re going to come in and make a lot of money fast, and it’s going to be easy money, you are mistaken.If you’re looking for easy money and you think you can be lazy and succeed in real estate, it is not going to happen.
Number two, do not become a realtor if you are impatient. If you can’t wait, if you think I need to start today and get paid in a week, and I want to get paid every week after that, real estate is not the path for you. Okay? If you’re desperate for a paycheck and you’re like, “Man, I’m going to get my real estate license. I got to get paid fast.” Real estate is not the place that is going to happen. A lot of real estate agents come in and they go months without their first paycheck. And then it can be inconsistent for a while even if you’re good. Even if you get the right training, even if you do the right stuff, it can still take a while. And if you’re impatient or you’re desperate for a paycheck, real estate is probably not the path for you to take as a realtor right now. You just have to know that going in.
So number three, do not become a realtor if you are a DIY-er. What is that? A Do It Yourself-er. And what I mean by that is, if you think that you get your license and go like, “Don’t talk to me, I got this. I got a background in marketing. I got a background in construction. I got a background in whatever.” And you think that you are going to come in and figure it out on your own, good luck with that.
Now, I’m not saying you can’t do that. But I’m going to tell you that you’re going to spend a lot of time on your back and a lot of time on your flat on your face.
If you want to succeed in real estate, being a do it yourself-er is not the best way to do it. And most real estate agents, when they come in, and they come in cocky and they think, I got this because I got some special background or I got some special insider knowledge or inside track or whatever. Most of them are in for a painful discovery, that it is not what they thought. And they are not as good as they thought they were. If you can’t take coaching, if you can’t take training from a mentor, from somebody who’s already been there and done that, it is going to be a long, painful journey for you. I’ve seen it happen over and over again. Don’t become a realtor if you’re a do it yourself-er and are not willing to take coaching and training.
Number four. Do not become a realtor if you are a quitter. If you are someone who gives up easily, if you are one of those triers, I’m going to try it out. I’m going to give it a shot. I’m going to see how it goes. If you’re with somebody that comes in and just comes in with reservations and says, “Well, I’m just going to wade into it and just see how it works for me.” You’re going to get too many bloody noses, too many black eyes, too many disappointments to make it. Okay.
Real estate is for people who can come in and have an adult commitment and commit to a course of action that says, I will not be denied. I will not be defeated. I will not fail. And I will not quit. If you give up easily and you get discouraged easily, I am dead serious being a real estate agent is probably not for you. If you don’t have some emotional toughness and emotional stamina and mental toughness, you probably should take a traditional career path and get a boss.
And that leads to number five. Why you should not become a realtor is, do not become a realtor if you are not driven.
If you don’t have personal initiative, if you can’t get yourself going, if you don’t know how to kick your own butt, real estate is probably not the path for you. If you need someone else to kick you in the butt to get you in gear, to get you, “I just need somebody to hold me accountable. I just need somebody to motivate me.” If that’s you, what you need is not a business, you need a boss. Okay? Bosses are designed for employees who need somebody to kick them in the butt and tell them what to do and make them go do it. But in real estate, you are a business owner. You’re an entrepreneur. You own the business and fail or succeed is up to you.
And if you don’t have enough drive, and you don’t have enough of a dream to get yourself going and keep yourself going through the tough times, through the times when you want to get impatient and be patient, and push and keep going and not give up. If you’re not willing to push through all that, and you don’t have the self personal starting power to keep you going, the tenacity, the grit, the drive, the perseverance to stick to it, get another job my friend. Go get a real job. There’s no shame in that. There’s no failure in that. Then real estate is probably not for you. Okay?
Now, should I become a real estate agent?
Yes. If you are willing to work hard. If you are willing to be patient and know it’s going to take time to get yourself going and make money. Now, you can make a lot of money. You can make six figures in your first 12 months. I’ve coached agents to make 200, 300, nearly $400,000 in their rookie year. You can make a lot of money, but you got to go in and come in with patience.
So if you are patient, if you are willing to take coaching and mentorship and training, if you are willing to push through the disappointments, push through the failure, push through those moments where you feel discouraged and not sure what to do next. If you’re willing to push through that and have the commitment and the drive to win no matter what, then real estate might be for you.
And if you are willing to push yourself, and you got a dream, and you got a drive, and you got a hunger that nobody needs to push you. You show up and you say, “What do I do next?” And you’re the one that goes out and makes things happen, there is not a better career path on the planet. And people ask, “Well, what about right now? Is now a good time to get into real estate?” And the answer is, absolutely yes. There are going to be such amazing opportunities out there.
They’re out there right now. And those opportunities are only going to get bigger with all the craziness and the chaos that is happening in our country right now, in our world, and what’s going to continue to happen in the housing market. There are going to be massive opportunities for a real estate agent who knows what to do and is willing to do it and not be like anyone of those five things.
